The Dashboard Work Area is a fixed panel in the work area that displays the dashboard you are currently working with. You can select the different tabs in your dashboard by clicking on the tab itself, or selecting it from the drop down list that appears when you press the tab selection button.

To add a new tab, delete a tab or rename tabs, use the appropriate buttons on the edit dashboard tab. You can re-order your tabs by pressing the left mouse over a tab, and dragging it left or right whilst holding the left mouse button down.
